How to Mount a Tablet on the Wall Without Drilling

|Mike

Quick take: a slide-on tablet mount can go up with removable adhesive strips instead of screws. Stick the plate to the tablet, stick the wall plate to a clean, smooth wall, wait an hour, and slide the tablet on. No drill, no holes, and nothing to patch when you move out.

Who this is for

Renters, dorms, offices where you cannot drill, and anyone who wants to try a spot for a dashboard or a calendar before committing to it.

Mounts that go up without drilling

The Renter-Friendly Tablet Wall Mount is made for removable adhesive strips. These mounts take either 2 screws or command strips, so you can start with strips:

How to put it up

  1. Pick a smooth, flat, painted wall. Strips hold poorly on textured paint, wallpaper, tile grout and brick.
  2. Wipe the spot with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Household cleaners leave a film that strips do not grip.
  3. On fresh paint, wait about a week before sticking anything to it.
  4. Stick the tablet plate to the back of the tablet.
  5. Press the strips onto the wall plate, then press the wall plate onto the wall firmly for about 30 seconds. Use a level.
  6. Wait one full hour before hanging the tablet, then slide it down onto the wall plate.

Power without an electrician

A wall tablet that runs all day needs a cable. Without opening the wall, run a USB cable down to the nearest outlet and hide it in a stick-on cable raceway, which you can paint to match the wall. A right-angle cable plug keeps the cable tight to the edge of the tablet.

The slide-on design also means the tablet does not have to stay plugged in. Lift it off, charge it, and slide it back on.

Taking it down

Lift the tablet off the wall plate. To remove a strip, pull its tab slowly and straight down along the wall, not out towards you. It stretches and lets go without taking the paint with it.

Questions

Can you mount a tablet on the wall without drilling?

Yes. Use a slide-on mount that takes removable adhesive strips, on a smooth painted wall. Wait an hour after sticking the wall plate before you hang the tablet.

Do I need an electrician to wall mount a tablet?

No. Run a USB cable to a nearby outlet inside a stick-on cable raceway. Hiding power inside the wall is a bigger job, and any mains wiring is one for an electrician.

Will adhesive strips damage my wall?

Not when you remove them right: pull the tab slowly and straight down along the wall. Avoid fresh paint and wallpaper.
